Cortinarius annulatus Pk. Cap 3-9cm across, broadly convex; bronze yellowish in color; dry, not hygrophanous, covered in minute tawny yellow scales. Gills adnate; pallid ochre-yellow at first, eventually bright, rusty-colored. Stem 40-80 x 7-18mm, base slightly swollen; covered in golden-yellow universal veil most of the way up from the base to the ring-like remnants, whitish above. Flesh pallid yellow, the base of the stem orangy yellow. Odor strong, plantlike or radish-like. Taste mild. Spores subglobose, distinctly rough and warty, 6-7 x 5-6µ, quotient 1.2. Deposit rusty brown. Habitat in mixed woods. Uncommon. Found n the eastern side of North America, west as far as Wisconsin and from Missouri north. Season July-September. Not edible. Comment I am uncertain about which subgenus this distinctive mushroom belongs to, possibly it will eventually be included in subgenus Leprocybe after further study. |
